Somyot’s journey to next court hearing
Somyot is now travelling the long journey north to his next court hearing on Monday 16th January. Somyot’s lawyer has been requesting the court to allow a transfer back to Bangkok prison but to no avail. Prosecutor’s witnesses are all based in Bangkok and they are requested by the prosecutor to travel to different provinces to give testimonies.
Because of the lack of reason for the court hearings being in different parts of the country we believe this is an attempt to keep him in isolation. Ironically for the librarian of Bangkok prison, he is no longer allowed even books to read.
Any time he is transferred to another provincial prison, they put him on truck, standing, his ankles heavily cuffed with metal manacles. There are no toilet facilities allowed for the whole journey.
This is why the request for bail is so important for our campaign, so that Somyot is physically and psychologically protected during the trail process to allow for him to have a fair trial.
The transfer in February from Nakornsawan in the north to Songkla province in the south will be most painful.
